2 teens arrested for attempted carjacking in Perry South

Pittsburgh police have arrested two teenagers who they say attempted an armed carjacking in Perry South Wednesday night.

The incident was reported at 10:09 p.m. on N. Charles Street.

Kerrell Lee, 18, of the Hill District and Derrick Lewis, 15, of Northview Heights, face charges of robbery of a motor vehicle, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, and firearms violations, Public Safety spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.

Lewis also attempted to kick police officers as he was being arrested, and faces additional charges of resisting arrest and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, Schaffer said. He is being charged as an adult.

Schaffer said the suspects approached a woman in her vehicle and asked for a ride. When the woman refused, the teenagers pulled out a gun and demanded her keys. The woman ran and called 911.

When the two suspects could not get the vehicle to start, they ran away; police caught them on N. Charles Street, said Schaffer. The gun believed to have been used in the incident was found under a vehicle on the same street.

Both were taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
