Allegheny County Council President John DeFazio set a Friday deadline to apply for the District 11 seat left vacant by the death of Councilwoman Barbara Daly Danko.

Applicants must be a Democrat and a resident of District 11 — several East End neighborhoods, part of the South Side, Munhall, Homestead and West Homestead — for at least one year.

Council will interview applicants Monday behind closed doors. DeFazio, a Shaler Democrat, hopes council will appoint someone to fill the seat at the June 2 meeting.

Council must appoint someone to fill the seat until a special election in November to determine who fills out the final weeks of Danko's term.

People must submit resumes by noon Friday to Jared Barker, council's chief clerk, by email to jbarker@county.allegheny.pa.us or fax to 412-350-6499 and Barker's attention.

Danko, a Regent Square Democrat, died May 6. She was 61. She won her primary and will be replaced on the regular November ballot by someone selected by members of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee who live in District 11.
