Deputies return to Florida house where they found Konias

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. — Sheriff's deputies and detectives from Western Pennsylvania this afternoon returned to the boarding house where authorities found fatal armored-car heist suspect Ken Konias Jr. after eight weeks on the run. The officers left, empty-handed, and would not comment after more than two hours in the house. A half-dozen officers, some with their hands on holstered guns and wearing Broward County Sheriff's vests, went to the door of the home on SW Eighth Street about 4 p.m. A deputy who left the house about 45 minutes later would not say what they were doing at the house. A sheriff's spokesman said the deputies were assisting an outside agency's investigation, so he could not comment. Pittsburgh Detective J.R. Smith and Ross Detective Brian Kohlhepp declined comment when they left about 6:25 p.m. Police say Konias, 22, of Dravosburg killed co-worker Michael Haines in Ross on Feb. 28 while the two drove an armored car for Garda Cash Logistics. He left Haines' body and the car in the Strip District and fled with $2.3 million, police say. He fled to Florida, where authorities found him early Tuesday based on a tip from the male friend of a woman who befriended Konias. Other people who knew him in Pompano Beach said he spent time with and money on prostitutes and strippers. Police recovered $1.1 million at the house and a nearby storage facility, and are trying to determine what happened to the rest of the money.
