Ice cream sandwiches for a cause

A scoop of Klavon’s ice cream.

Two Eat’n Park smiley cookies.

Heavenly - but you’ll need a spoon.

This sweet combination is available only a short time, so if you like dessert, get on down to Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor in the Strip District and enjoy one, or two, or more.

This limited edition creation of a generous scoop of ice cream nestled between two of the famous Eat’n Park Smiley fresh baked sugar cookies will only be available until Dec. 8 and only at Klavon’s.

The partnership is part of Eat’n Park’s 2018 Caring for Kids Campaign, will all profits benefiting Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation.

The idea for the combination came from Klavon’s owner Jacob Hanchar, who with his wife Desiree, purchased the shop in July 2013—opening on National Ice Cream Day. The couple wanted to keep the tradition alive, retaining most of the original décor from 1923.

Jacob Hanchar reached out to Eat’n Park Hospitality Group owners Jim and Jeff Broadhurst, and the team was created.

“I grew up in Ebensburg and went to the Eat’n Park in Altoona,” Jacob Hanchar recalled. “And I always remember the Smiley cookie and how happy that cookie made me as a child.”

There are six flavors—the ice cream matches the cookie icing. The green cookie has mint chocolate chip, the yellow cookie has vanilla or chocolate chip cookie dough, the blue cookie has blue monster ice cream (Oreo chocolate chip and cookie dough), the red cookie has strawberry and the orange cookie has peach ice cream. Each is $4 ($2 from each will be donated to the foundation).

“What better idea than Klavon’s Ice Cream and Eat’n Park Smiley Cookie?” says Becky McArdle, Eat’n Park spokeswoman. “We are excited to see where the partnership goes. We love partnering with other local Pittsburgh companies that have the same values as us. And it’s all for a great cause.”

It definitely is, agrees Lacie Spagnolo, of Shaler, whose 8-year-old son Jimmy has spent months in UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh after finishing treatment for a brain tumor. Jimmy Spagnolo loves to eat at Eat’n Park because they waitresses at the store near their house know him and treat him well. The doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital saved his life, his mother says.

“He is my miracle kid,” she says. “We love to give back so whenever they ask us to be part of an event we say, ‘yes.’ The Caring for Kids Campaign is amazing and helps so many children and their families through such a difficult time. I love that we are here eating ice cream and not in a hospital room.”

In its 40 years, the Eat’n Park Caring for Kids Campaign has raised $10 million overall, and $9 million for Children’s Hospital.
