Wendy Bell returned to social media Saturday by setting up a new Facebook page four days after WTAE-TV fired her over a controversial March 21 post she made on her WTAE Facebook page.

“This page is for the city I love and the country I adore. I am a journalist. A mom of 5. A dreamer who believes we all have the power to make a difference,” Bell says on the page.

In its first three hours of existence, her page drew more than 20,600 likes.

Bell and a spokesman for WTAE's parent company, Hearst Television, couldn't be reached for comment.

Bell's speculation about the race, backgrounds and family histories of the gunmen who killed five adults and an unborn child last month at a Wilkinsburg cookout drew widespread criticism. The same post commented on the positive work of a South Side restaurant worker, who is black.

Bell, who is white, later apologized, as did WTAE. The post was removed, and her WTAE Facebook page has been deleted by the station.

WTAE officials on Wednesday said they fired the popular anchor because her Facebook post was “inconsistent with the company's ethics and journalistic standards.”
