A former McKees Rocks resident has been sentenced to eight years in prison for selling fentanyl to a woman who suffered a fatal overdose after using the drug, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said.

U.S. District Court Judge Cathy Bissoon imposed the sentence on Michael Smith, 30. The prison sentence will be followed by six years of supervised release.

Smith had been convicted of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances.

According to information presented to the court, Pittsburgh police in November 2016 were investigating the fatal overdose of a 31-year-old woman that had been caused by fentanyl. Smith was identified as the person who had supplied it.

A search warrant executed at Smith’s residence found fentanyl, crack cocaine and heroin. He admitted to selling the drugs that caused the woman’s death.
