Greenleaf Street, closed since February landslide, reopens

A Duquesne Heights road closed since a landslide in February has reopened, restoring a connection for Duquesne Heights and Mount Washington residents, city officials announced Monday.

In February, tons of soil came down from Mount Washington onto Greenleaf Street and caused the temporary closing of the Route 19/60 ramps toward the West End Bridge.

While PennDOT and city crews worked around the clock for nearly a week to reopen the ramps, Greenleaf Street remained closed.

The city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure on Monday completed clearing soil and making drainage improvements, allowing Greenleaf to be reopened between Saw Mill Run and Bradley Street.

The “intermediate measures” were done to allow the street to reopen.

“Significant additional work is needed and planned for spring of 2019 to better stabilize the existing slide area,” the city said in a release.

More than $1 million has been spent so far to fix the slide, including excavation, geotechnical investigation and engineering design.
