An Allegheny County Jail inmate stabbed another Wednesday, according to the mother of two jail guards who has advocated for more safety at the jail.

Jail officials confirmed there was a fight between two inmates Wednesday but would not say whether anyone was stabbed.

Lisa Lightner, whose sons work at the jail, said the inmate also tried to stab a guard with a shank. Lightner and two retired guards Tuesday protested outside the jail to raise concerns about guard safety .

The alleged stabbing Wednesday came just five days after two inmates stabbed two guards Friday on Pod 7E. The guards, who were not named, were taken to the hospital. Authorities recovered two shanks after that attack.

Deputy Warden Jason Beasom said the fight Wednesday between inmates happened around 9:30 a.m. on Pod 6E, according to an email from Amie Downs, a county spokeswoman. The county declined to answer whether anyone was stabbed or whether a shank was used.

Both inmates were taken to the medical unit, treated and cleared, Beasom said. They were not transported to the hospital. No jail staff was injured.

The aggressor will receive an internal misconduct, Beasom said. The county did not release the names of the inmates.

Lightner’s sons were not working at the time of the stabbing.
