A federal judge sentenced a Latrobe man to more than 11 years in prison followed by 20 years of supervised release for distributing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Brady said Wednesday.

Timothy David Piper, 22, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mark R. Hornak.

Prosecutors said Piper “groomed and sexually assaulted a minor male child, admitted to taking sexually explicit images and videos of the child using his cellular phone, and shared the images and videos over the internet” in January 2016.

Prosecutors say the case was part of project Safe Childhood, an initiative of the Justice Department that aims to combat “the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica Lieber Smolar prosecuted the case. The FBI and Greensburg police conducted the investigation.
