Mt. Lebanon School District officials named the high school library in honor of Richard J. Madden on Sunday at a dedication and community open house at the renovated high school.

The $109.6 million project included construction such as a science wing, arts spaces, technology infrastructure and an athletic building with three gyms and an eight-lane pool. At least 500 people attended the dedication ceremony, district spokeswoman Cissy Bowman said, and more arrived to tour the building.

The library named for Madden is a new space for students.

He is a 1952 graduate who made significant donations to the school during the past 14 years through a scholarship fund in his name.

Principal Brian McFeeley said naming the library for Madden was a perfect way to acknowledge his contributions. The Richard J. Madden Scholarship has contributed $585,000 in scholarships for Mt. Lebanon High School juniors who need financial help to attend a two- or four-year college or technical school.

Madden, who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1956 with a degree in electrical engineering, worked for Westinghouse before founding technology company Computerm Corp., which was sold in 2000. He founded the scholarship program in 2001.
