Daniel Mosse, a professor and former chair of the University of Pittsburgh department of computer science, was selected to take his new company, HiberSense, to the first University Startups Demo Day before Congress Sept. 20.

Noteworthy: HiberSense, a startup founded by Mosse and recent University of Pittsburgh graduates Jacob Kring and Brendan Quay, will participate in the first University Startups Demo Day on Sept. 20, showcasing their work to Congress and other companies. HiberSense designs sensors and motorized vents for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that can create “micro-zones,” along with a program that learns the users' routines and preferences for each room's temperature.

Education: Mosse earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Brasilia in Brazil and a master's degree and doctorate in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Background: Working from East Liberty's AlphaLab Gear, Mosse and HiberSense have deployed “beta” systems in eight homes around Pittsburgh and, through the city's PGH Lab program, in the Urban Redevelopment Authority's 10th-floor offices Downtown.
