Noteworthy: Newman was selected as the first Katherine M. Detre Endowed Chair of Population Health Science in the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health. Detre was one of the country's top epidemiologists and Pitt's Distinguished Professor of Epidemiology. She died in 2006. The chair supports large-scale clinical trials in epidemiology.

Occupation: Newman is the chairwoman of the Department of Epidemiology at Pitt and is director of the school's Center for Aging and Population Health. As a professor and epidemiologist, Newman has led several studies of aging.

Education: Newman earned a bachelor's degree in biology in 1978, a medical degree in 1982 and a master's degree in public health in 1987, all from the University of Pittsburgh.
