Pittsburgh selling bicentennial replica of Roberto Clemente Bridge

The city of Pittsburgh has a bridge it'd like to sell you.

A wooden replica of a gold-painted bridge arch and part of its cables and deck, modeled after the Roberto Clemente Bridge connecting Downtown Pittburgh and the North Shore, stood outside the City-County Building's entrance as part of the city's Bicentennial celebrations last year, city spokeswoman Katie O'Malley said. The Department of Public Works built it.

“It was prominently on display on the City-County Building Portico for most of last year and was a very popular background for Kodak moments,” O'Malley said. “A few inquiries about its future have come in so DPW decided to put the bridge up for auction so interested parties can bid on it.”

Now the bridge is up for auction on GovDeals.com , for anyone able to haul it away from its current home in an Uptown warehouse within 10 days of the sale.

“It's pretty big! ... The Bridge looks to be at least 15 feet high and even as high as 20 feet. I would figure on it being at least 12 feet wide at the base,” wrote a city representative on the auction page. “Better to overestimate. It will be a very serious job to haul this away.”

Whether you use it as a fancy trellis, a novelty swing set or the centerpiece of a cavernous man cave, the bridge can still be had for a bargain. The high bid as of Wednesday afternoon was $160. Four people had placed bids. The auction, which began Nov. 30, ends just after noon Thursday.
