The long-awaited opening of the new Greenfield Bridge is set for this weekend with no shortage of fanfare.

The Greenfield Community Association is hosting a “Bridge is Back” party with a full day of activities Saturday starting at noon before the bridge opens to traffic by 8 a.m. Sunday.

The event will include food trucks, live music, activities for children and games.

At 7 p.m., Mayor Bill Peduto will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a parade of vehicles.

The bridge will be illuminated by a Luxe Creative lighting display Friday and Saturday nights, according to Katie O'Malley, Peduto spokeswoman.

The bridge originally opened in 1921. By the time it was demolished in 2015, it was in such disrepair that a structure and netting had been installed underneath it to catch chunks of concrete form the structure so they wouldn't hit drivers on I-376.
