Coming soon to the Parkway West: a weekend traffic nightmare.

PennDOT officials announced Thursday that both directions of a portion of the Parkway West will be closed for several hours this weekend as crews rush to finish scheduled paving work before winter.

“We were anticipating our winter hiatus starting in December, but they’ve made good progress, so if we get good weather this weekend, the winter hiatus could start next week,” PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said. “There will be congestion. We started the outbound closure at 2 a.m. Saturday so motorists can get out of town for Light Up Night.”

The closures will occur between the I-79 (Exit 64A) and Greentree (Exit 67) interchanges.

The outbound side will be closed from 2 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday. On the inbound side, the road will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday, PennDOT officials said.

During the full closures, there will be a single lane closure on the opposite side during the same times.

Traffic will be detoured through Carnegie.

Cowan said crews will be moving barriers in preparation to open both lanes in each direction as normal during the winter. That means the narrow lanes in the construction zone will be restored to normal 12-foot width, and the on/off ramps to Carnegie will be open for the winter — until work starts again in March.

The work is part of a $72.83 million improvement project on the Parkway West. The overall project includes resurfacing I-376 between I-79 and the Fort Pitt Tunnel. Bridge rehabilitation work, drainage improvements, guiderail upgrades, signing and pavement marking, and concrete median barrier replacement will be conducted.
