Sky lit up with meteors as Perseid peaked this past weekend

Stargazers in the Northern Hemisphere were treated to an impressive show when the annual Perseid meteor shower reached its peak over the weekend.
The phenomenon can feature up to 80 shooting stars in an hour, and it coincided with the new moon over the weekend, allowing for maximum visibility.
The Perseids are caused when the Earth makes its yearly pass by the Swift-Tuttle comet, traveling through streams of debris left behind in space. The meteor shower is most visible early in the morning from July 17 to Aug. 24. For best visibility, find dark skies away from urban centers.
