Tribune-Review photographer Stephanie Strasburg earned an honorable mention for one of the top awards given by the National Press Photographers Association.

Strasburg was given a commendation in the annual competition's domestic news category for her April 5 photo of a woman being comforted at the scene of a Hill District shooting in which her son was killed.

The woman, Jacqueline Graham, also lost a daughter and sister to gun violence.

“It breaks my heart to think of all that loss for one woman,” Strasburg said. “She is a true face of those affected by gun violence in America.”

A graduate of Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt., Strasburg became a full-time Trib photographer after interning at the paper in the summer of 2012.

In 2014, she was runner-up in the NPPA's Cliff Edom New America Award for her photo essay “In the shadow of steel,” about residents in struggling Mon Valley communities.

“Steph is a consummate photographer,” said John Schisler, the Trib's chief of photography. “She always puts in the extra effort to make a photograph and pours her heart into every subject.”

The top prize in this year's domestic news category went to Chip Somodevilla of Getty Images. Andrew Nelles of Reuters took second, and Michael DeMocker of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans finished third.

Mark Pynes of PennLive and Alex Brandon of The Associated Press also received honorable mentions.
