Penn Hills-based Turner Dairy Farms is expanding its reach further into the Pittsburgh market by acquiring the city's last remaining dairy.
Turner's officials said Thursday they are acquiring Colteryahn Dairy in Pittsburgh's Carrick neighborhood. Colteryahn will become known as Pittsburgh Special-T Dairy.
“As we fully integrate Colteryahn Dairy into our business, we're excited to keep open the Brownsville Road facility, the sole remaining dairy in the City of Pittsburgh,” said Chuck Turner Jr., the third-generation president of the family-run business.
Carl Colteryahn III will remain president of the Carrick dairy.
“I'm looking forward to working with the Turner family to combine the legacies that both our families have built in Pittsburgh and especially the chance to teach and mentor the fourth generation of their family as they enter the business,” Colteryahn said.
The dairy has been at the center of a years-long revitalization effort in a section of Carrick that is now known as the Carrick Dairy District. Development officials aim to transform the area into a destination spot with a fresh market and restaurants.
The Dairy District debuted last June with cow-milking demonstrations and cheese and ice-cream samples.
Colteryahn has been at its Carrick location since 1917. Milk is brought in from area farms for processing.
Turner said the move will allow his dairy to branch out in terms of specialty products, an area in which the company has been successful before — such as with the dairy's Limited Edition Flavored Milk Series, he said.
It also will allow Turner's to expand further into the Pittsburgh retail market. Pittsburgh Special-T Dairy will produce Turner's branded products as well as a number of co-packed products, according to Turner.
He said the two dairies have been exploring the acquisition since late 2016.
“Then planning for the transition started slow as we wanted to ensure a successful and well-planned transition,” he said.
