Visitors can now see Pittsburgh Zoo's new baby elephant
Pittsburgh's newest elephant doesn't know any tricks yet, or have a name, but visitors to the zoo can watch her play and sometimes sleep.
Beginning Friday, the yet-to-be-named calf will be visible to the public between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily in the family elephant room as long as she is well enough.
“We are very excited to be able to provide visitors with a chance to get a look at the new calf,” said Dr. Barbara Baker, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, in a release. “The little calf's health and welfare is our top priority. We want to ensure that she will be comfortable being in the family room with more people and movement outside of the exhibit.”
The Zoo advises visitors that hope to catch a glimpse of the calf to check the Zoo's website on the day of their visit to ensure that the elephant will be in the family elephant room.
The calf arrived in Pittsburgh at the beginning of June, almost a week after being born prematurely at the International Conservation Center in Somerset County, and has been under close watch of zoo staff since.
