The new Pennsylvania Turnpike bridge across Brush Creek is seen under construction, looking eastbound, in New Sewickley Township, Beaver County.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed between the New Castle and Cranberry interchanges from Friday night through the weekend and result in an 80-mile detour for motorists.

The turnpike plans to demolish and replace a bridge over Brush Creek in New Sewickley in less than three days.

The mainline of the turnpike will close at 9 p.m. Friday and is expected to reopen at 4 a.m. Monday, according to a turnpike commission press release.

The official authorized detour, which will be posted, follows Interstates 376, 80 and 79.

Turnpike officials encourage motorists to avoid the area during peak hours because significant travel delays are expected.

Drivers headed east will exit at the New Castle interchange (Exit 10), while westbound motorists will exit at the Cranberry interchange (Exit 28). Local eastbound travelers will be able to proceed past the New Castle interchange in order to exit at the Beaver Valley interchange (Exit 13).

Workers have constructed the new bridge alongside the existing 150-foot-long span, which opened in December 1951 and is crossed by about 40,000 vehicles per day.

During the closure, crews will knock down the old structure and slide the new one into place.

“The Accelerated Bridge Construction process is a cost-effective way to replace bridges within a short time frame while reducing worker exposure in construction zones,” turnpike CEO Mark Compton said. “It also eliminates the need for months or years of cattle chutes, single-lane traffic patterns and other restrictions for motorists.”
