Winter homeless shelter to open Wednesday in Pittsburgh
Winter shelters for the homeless will open Wednesday, according to an Allegheny County news release.
The shelters will open nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. through March 15, regardless of weather, the release said. The shelters will also open from March 16 through 31 during extreme weather.
“Extreme weather” means a temperature of 25 degrees or below, a wind chill below 15 degrees, or when the chance of freezing precipitation is 50 percent or greater, the release said.
The men’s shelter will again be located at the Smithfield United Church of Christ at 620 Smithfield Street, Downtown.
The location of the women’s shelter is only known by the persons served and to county employees who provide the service.
The county’s Department of Human Services and Pittsburgh Mercy’s Operation Safety Net organize the program.
Last year, the shelters assisted more than 1,000 people, with an average nightly census of 92 men and 50 women, the release said.
