A Riverview High School sign, which district officials called an eyesore, will come down.

The black sign with white lettering sits near the intersection of Hulton Road and Third Street in Oakmont.

It’s on a Peoples Gas meter house built in the 1970s.

Peoples Spokesman Barry Kukovich said the building will remain with some aesthetic upgrades.

“It’s part of the infrastructure of the school, and it’s there to protect the meter,” Kukovich said. “That’s a beautiful area there, especially since Hulton Road has been modernized. We’re willing to plant shrubberies around it and mask it from view, which is what we’ve done for a lot of meter houses.”

The company also committed $3,000 to the district.

Carrie DelRosso, district PR/communications specialist and Oakmont councilwoman, said the money will be used for a new sign closer toward the main entrance of the school.

“Riverview is grateful for the donation, and as an Oakmont borough official, I am happy to have the support of Peoples’s Gas in our school safety zone,” she said.

It was unclear when the sign would come down and a new one would be installed.
