Riverview High School senior Sydney Reyes was awarded the St. John's University Ozanam scholarship.

The New York school's program focuses on academics and research, Vincentian service and global citizenship. About 25 out of 500 applicants are selected each year.

Reyes, 18, of Verona submitted three essays, was interviewed and granted a $10,000 annual scholarship for four years to the university.

She plans to major in either research studies or English literature and writing. Her minor will be in social justice, which is a requirement for the scholarship.

Reyes has a 4.0 GPA and volunteers for GirlGov, a teen program through the Women and Girls Foundation designed to promote civic engagement.

Her parents are Lora Peluso and Daniel Reyes.
