Quaker Valley, Sewickley Academy boys earn No. 3 seeds in WPIAL tournaments

The top three boys basketball teams from Section 2-4A are the top three seeds in the upcoming WPIAL 4A tournament.

New Castle is the top seed, followed by Ambridge at No. 2 and Quaker Valley at No. 3. The Quakers have earned a bye into the quarterfinals and will face the winner of Knoch and South Park on Feb. 23.

The Sewickley Academy boys are the No. 3 seed in 2A and have a bye to the quarterfinals. They will take on the winner of Jeannette and Springdale on Feb. 22.

Sewickley Academy, Quaker Valley girls set for WPIAL postseason

The Sewickley Academy girls basketball team is the No. 8 seed in the WPIAL 1A bracket, and it will face California on Tuesday at Canon-McMillan High School.

The winner will move into the quarterfinals and take on top seed West Greene on Feb. 22.

In 4A, Quaker Valley is the No. 13 seed and will face No. 4 Freeport in the first round Monday at North Allegheny. The winner advances to the quarterfinals Feb. 21 to face the winner of Elizabeth Forward and Knoch.

QV hockey gearing up for Baldwin

The Quaker Valley hockey team has won three of its last four games and will try to keep its winning ways going Thursday against Baldwin at 6:40 p.m. at Ice Castle in Castle Shannon.

The Quakers are 5-11-0-1 (11 points) in the Northwest Division of Varsity AA. Baldwin is 8-8-0-1 (17 points) in the Southeast Division.

The top five teams in each division make the Penguins Cup tournament. QV is in fifth in the Northwest, four points clear of Armstrong and Shaler.
