The state Department of Environmental Protection will hold a hearing Dec. 12 on a pollutant discharge permit request for the Amerikohl Revtai mine reclamation project in Saltlick Township, Fayette County.
An informal informational session will be held before the hearing from 1-2 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Saltlick Township Municipal Building, 147 Municipal Building Road, Melcroft. The hearing will follow from 2-3 p.m.
The project involves the reclamation of abandoned mine land in Saltlick Township in northeastern Fayette County, near the Westmoreland County line.
Butler-based Amerikohl Mining Inc. is seeking a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit that would cover discharges to unnamed tributaries of Little Champion Creek, the DEP said. The site has four proposed NPDES outfalls in an area of Saltlick Township designated for use as cold water fisheries.
Individuals will have the opportunity to present up to five minutes of oral testimony relevant to the NPDES application and draft NPDES permit. Those who wish to present testimony should register in advance by contacting DEP community relations coordinator Lauren Fraley at lfraley@pa.gov or 412-442-4203.
Preregistration will be taken through noon Dec. 11. Individuals will be called to testify in the order they registered. Time permitting, those who did not register will be given the opportunity to testify.
The DEP will record testimony and receive written comments throughout the hearing. Testifiers should bring at least one copy of their testimony and exhibits for submission to DEP.
Those unable to attend the hearing may submit three copies of a written statement and exhibits within 15 days of the hearing to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, District Mining Operations, 131 Broadview Road, New Stanton, PA 15672.
