Pittsburgh bucks national trend toward hiring RNs without bachelor’s degrees
The Pittsburgh metro area is bucking a national trend where employers in major metropolitan areas are more willing to hire registered nurses who don’t have bachelor’s degrees, according to a report by the Federal Reserve of Cleveland.
The study is based on an analysis of online job postings and shows that from 2010 to 2014, the number of postings for registered nurses generally followed trends for other types of jobs.
From 2014 to 2016, however, the postings for registered nurses increased by 130 percent, or about four times the rate of other jobs, said the study’s author, Kyle Fee, a regional community development adviser.
Postings in the Pittsburgh area grew by 88.8 percent.
While employers increasingly sought registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees from 2010 to 2014, that trend reversed and most of the increase in job postings has come from employers that don’t require a bachelor’s degree, the study found.
The Pittsburgh metro area was one of the exceptions. The number of ads listing a bachelor’s degree as a requirement increased from 35 percent in 2010 to 44.9 percent in 2016, the study says.
