The UMWA erected the Robina Monument near Masontown to remember the 37 miners who lost their lives in the Robena No. 3 Mine explosion on December 06, 1962.
The anniversary of the Robena No. 3 Mine disaster in Greene County that killed 37 men on Dec. 6, 1962, will be observed at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Robena monument on Route 21, just west of the former Hatfields Ferry Power Station near Carmichaels.
United Mine Workers International President Cecil Roberts is scheduled to speak at the memorial service, along with Levi Allen, UMWA International secretary-treasurer.
The 37 men, including a Penn State mining engineer student, were killed in a methane gas explosion at the Robena No. 3 Mine’s Frosty Run Shaft. The mine, reported to be the largest mechanized mine, was owned by U.S. Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh.
