Sewickley Academy girls basketball team hopes to rebound after close loss to section leader

After nearly knocking off Section 1-1A leader Rochester on Tuesday, the Sewickley Academy girls basketball team returns to action Thursday at 7 p.m. against Quigley Catholic at the Events Center.

The Panthers (8-3, 5-2) had won five straight before the 49-48 loss to the Rams (13-3, 8-0).

Sewickley Academy defeated Quigley 44-34 when the teams met Dec. 20.

Quigley enters the game also 5-2 in section play and has won six of seven. It has averaged 59.1 points a game during the run.

QV wrestlers claim section team title

The Quaker Valley wrestling team captured the Section 2-AA title Wednesday with a 43-33 victory over Keystone Oaks in the championship match.

The Quakers avenged a 45-35 loss to the Eagles in their subsection match earlier this month.

QV, now 12-5 overall, edged Freedom, who finished first in the 2A subsection, 36-35 in the semifinals. KO topped Laurel 46-34 in the other semifinal.

The Quakers will enter the WPIAL AA tournament next week. The semifinals and finals are set for Feb. 2 at Chartiers-Houston.

Swimmers gear up for busy stretch

The Quaker Valley/Sewickley Academy combined boys and girls swim teams return to action Thursday at 4 p.m. against Mars as they continue the push to the WPIAL Class AA championships at the end of next month.

They will be busy over the next couple of weeks as they also swim against Carlynton, Central Valley and Hopewell before they test their mettle at the Midwestern Athletic Conference meet Feb. 8 and 9 at Moon High School.

QV last competed Jan. 16 against Blackhawk. The boys team scored an 81-65 win, and the girls were victorious 103-70. Six WPIAL cuts were achieved at the meet.
