UPMC eyes new hospital location in the South Hills

The search for a South Hills location to build a hospital has landed health giant UPMC back where it started — close to rival Allegheny Health Network's Jefferson Hospital.
An owner of the Practice Tee Golf Center in Jefferson Hills said he hopes to sell part of his property early next year to UPMC – which has been eyeing sites for a hospital in Pittsburgh's south suburbs.
Frank Veltri, owner of the golf center off Route 51, said Friday he was approached by commercial real estate company CBRE Pittsburgh about selling 25 acres. He said CBRE was representing UPMC, and that UPMC has done environmental testing on his land.
“I am hoping by January that this is a done deal,” he said.
UPMC spokeswoman Gloria Kreps said the health system is “considering this site and other sites in the South Hills.” CBRE representatives couldn't be reached for comment.
Last month, after the health system pulled out of a deal to construct a $200 million-plus, 90-bed hospital at the Newbury Market development in South Fayette, Kreps said UPMC would “soon announce more specific plans of a sophisticated set of facilities to better serve our patients.”
No reason was given for dropping the South Fayette plan. Earlier, UPMC tried unsuccessfully to build a UPMC South Center off Route 51 at Lindsay-Snyder Drive in Pleasant Hills.
Kreps said Friday that “UPMC is also pursuing other significant strategic options to advance the innovations in care and the cures that we provide to our patients and that are rapidly accelerating, including living-donor liver transplantation and immunotherapy treatments for cancer, aging, and vision restoration.”
Veltri said he owns the par-3 golf complex with business partner John Miller and that the par-3 course would be sold but the partners would retain the driving range. Veltri and Miller also own 24 Italian Village pizza franchise restaurants in the Pittsburgh area.
“It was a good offer,” said Veltri, who declined to disclose the sale price.
The Practice Tee site is less than two miles from Jefferson Hospital, owned by the Allegheny Health Network. An AHN spokeswoman declined comment late Friday.
