Allegheny Valley students to hear from Globetrotter about preventing bullying
A member of the Harlem Globetrotters is scheduled to be in Springdale this week to talk with kids about bullying.
Students from Allegheny Valley's Colfax Upper Elementary School will attend the program featuring Scooter Christensen beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday at Springdale Junior-Senior High School, district spokeswoman Jan Zastawniak said Tuesday.
The program will not be open to the public.
The Globetrotter's “ABC's of Bullying Prevention” was designed with the National Campaign to Stop Violence. It focuses on the “ABCs” of “Action,” “Bravery,” and “Compassion.”
Targeting children ages 6-to-12, the program involves Globetrotter players discussing those three key words and tools that kids can use on a daily basis to reduce bullying.
Christensen, No. 16, is a 6 foot 1 inch guard from Las Vegas and a 2002 graduate of the University of Montana.
Described as a “dribbling wizard” and one of the Globetrotter's premier ball handlers, Christensen was introduced to basketball when he was 5 years old. After winning a state championship and a team “most valuable player” honors in high school, he lead the University of Montana Grizzlies to the NCAA tournament in 2002.
On Nov. 12, 2015, he set the Guinness World Record for the longest duration spinning a basketball on the nose — 7.7 seconds, besting the old record of 5.2 seconds.
Christensen has appeared on TV shows including “The Bachelorette.”
According to his bio, Christensen is also known for his singing voice, growing up in a singing family, singing a lot in church, and once winning a karaoke contest.
