Employees are joining, leaving and being called back to the Highlands School District.

Two furloughed employees were brought back to Highlands Elementary School — Roger Parker, a paraprofessional, and Shannon Holzer, a fourth grade teacher.

The school board approved the hiring of a teacher and a nurse.

Karyl Moretti was hired as a sixth grade teacher at Highlands Middle School, effective Sept. 12 through Nov. 14, at an equivalent annual salary of $47,800. Lynn Malaspina was hired as a licensed practical nurse at Highlands High School effective Sept. 17 at $14.98 per hour.

The school board accepted the resignations of four employees, including Malaspina, who resigned as a paraprofessional at Highlands Early Childhood Center effective Aug. 24. Another paraprofessional at Highlands Elementary School, Jeanie Layhew, resigned effective Aug. 28.

The others are Darryl Zelenski, senior systems manager, effective Sept. 7, and William Phillips, director of information technology, effective Sept. 28.

Susan Bennick was hired as a long-term substitute math teacher at Highlands Middle School for the 2018-19 school year, effective Aug. 27. Her salary was set at $48,500, according to the district.
