New Kensington man faces felony strangulation charge regarding incident at Victoria Avenue home
A New Kensington man is accused of choking a woman to the point she became unresponsive and a 7-year-old girl had to call the police.
Melvin Scott, 50, was arrested Tuesday and remained in the Westmoreland County Prison on Wednesday in lieu of $10,000 bail.
He faces charges of felony strangulation and simple assault, which is a misdemeanor, according to court paperwork.
The incident allegedly happened at a home on Victoria Avenue early Tuesday morning.
According to court paperwork, investigators were called to the scene after the child called police reporting the assault in progress.
Police arrived and spoke with Scott, who police said smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech, and was having trouble standing. Inside, they found a woman laying on the floor, unresponsive, though she had a pulse and was breathing.
Police eventually were able to get a response from the woman, who told them she had trouble breathing and said Scott had choked her. Scott was arrested and the woman was taken to Allegheny Valley Hospital in Harrison by ambulance for treatment.
A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Dec. 20 before District Judge Frank J. Pallone Jr. in New Kensington.
