Tarentum police look over a shot-up SUV on Corbet Street in Tarentum on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018. The shooting happened in New Kensington.

Two men suffered non-life-threatening injures in a Tuesday morning shooting in New Kensington that spanned three crime scenes, acting police Chief Bob Deringer said.

The shooting was reported shortly before noon.

Deringer said police were called to McCargo Street, the Fuel Land gas station on Seventh Street, and the area by the Praha Hotel in Tarentum.

According to the chief, one of the men was believed to have been shot in the shoulder and upper chest; the other was shot in the upper arm. Both were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Deringer said the shooting took place on McCargo Street near Freeport Road, where officers found more than 20 shell casings from three guns. He said the majority of the casings were in the middle of the street. A couple were found in a yard and on a sidewalk.

“There’s no doubt about the shootout that happened there,” he said.

Deringer said a vehicle picked up one of the men who was shot, as well as another man, and dropped them off on Linden Avenue, near the gas station. He said the victim and the other man went into the gas station and an ambulance was called.

Deringer said the second man claimed to have just come across the shooting victim and was helping him when the vehicle stopped and gave them a ride. Deringer couldn’t say where the vehicle picked up the two men or whether that vehicle was involved in the shooting.

Shortly after the initial 911 call, Tarentum police found an SUV believed to have been linked to the shooting in the area of the Praha Hotel on Fourth Avenue in Tarentum, Deringer said.

There appeared to be multiple bullet holes in the SUV, with one in the passenger side of the windshield and the rest down the passenger side. Both front tires were flat.

“(It) was all shot up,” Deringer said. “I think it was struck upwards of 10-plus times. It had two flat tires, and the driver (had been) shot in the arm.”

A witness, who did not want to be identified, said he saw the victim stumbling in the area of Fourth Avenue and Corbet Street in Tarentum. He was holding his right arm, and there was blood on him, the witness said.

The witness said he tried asking the man if he was OK, but he was talking to someone on a phone and would not answer him. Another person put the shooting victim into a car and they left the area.

Deringer said police took photos of the SUV and impounded it. They planned to execute a search warrant on it Wednesday.

The investigation is ongoing. The Westmoreland Detective Bureau is assisting.

Deringer said neither victim is cooperating with police. Both are known to police.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the police department at 724-339-7534.
