The playground at Riverview Memorial Park in Tarentum on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018. The borough is considering applying for a nearly $200,000 state grant to improve the playground and the park.

Repairs, upgrades and new things could be coming to the playground at Tarentum’s Riverview Memorial Park.

The borough has an opportunity to apply for a $191,000 state grant that would pay for it, said borough Manager Michael Nestico.

The borough would not have to put up any of its own money, Mayor Eric Carter said.

Fixing the playground’s rubberized surface, extending fencing, and installing more benches and picnic tables are among some of the things the grant could pay for, Nestico said.

Council also discussed installing security cameras, and doing something to create a shaded area for parents while their children are at the adjacent spray park.

“It’s awful when you’re sitting there,” Councilwoman Lou Ann Homa said.

New swings were another idea.

“The playground equipment is getting dangerous,” Councilwoman Carrie Fox said. “It needs to be replaced.”

Fox said work also is needed at the park’s bandstand, on its walking trail and at Dreshar Stadium.

“There are a whole host of things we could do in the park,” Nestico said.

With the reality that the money would not go that far, Nestico suggested work be done in phases. Doing that, he said, would show the state and others offering funding that the borough can put together a multi-phase project, and it could get more money for it in the future.

Nestico suggested focusing on one area, such as the playground, to start with equipment, the rubberized surface and fencing.

“It’s our treasure piece,” Councilman Tim Cornuet said. “We don’t want to let it fall apart.”

At its voting meeting Thursday, council will vote on having its engineer prepare a scope of work and apply for the grant through the Keystone Communities program.
