Denise Kissell, a registered nurse and certified diabetes instructor, will be hosting a discussion on diabetes in Tarentum’s Riverview Memorial Park on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018. It follows a series of four talks she held this summer, and is open to anyone whether they attended the earlier sessions or not.

A Tarentum nurse who held a series of talks on diabetes in Riverview Memorial Park this summer will be hosting a review and overview discussion on the condition next week.

Denise Kissell, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator, said 20 people attended each of the four sessions she held on Tuesdays from July 17 to Aug. 7 under the pavilion across from the newly named Mayor Carl Magnetta Jr. Memorial Amphitheater.

The new session is scheduled for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at the same place, rain or shine.

Kissell said those who attended the previous sessions wanted to get back together for a review.

“The people that came, they really liked what they learned. They felt they did gain information from this,” she said. “If they want to meet again in March, I’d be happy to do that, too. It shows they’re invested and involved. That’s what we want. We want people to be involved in their health.”

Kissell said she’ll cover healthy eating, being active, what diabetes is, low and high blood sugar and blood sugar readings. She’ll also give out recipes and answer any questions.

“This is not to take the place of their physician,” she said. “This is just a little bit of help.”

Anyone is welcome, whether they attended the previous sessions or not. It’s free and no advance registration is required.

“Anybody that shows up, we are happy to help them,” she said.
