Vandergrift welcome sign.

A code violation might soon be akin to a parking ticket in Vandergrift.

Borough council authorized Solicitor Larry Loperfito to explore a new ordinance that would allow code violators to be cited with what’s called a “Quality of Life” ticket. The violations include things such as high grass in yards and junked vehicles.

A violator would be handed a ticket for $25 for each code violation. A second violation would be $50, and failure to pay would escalate the citation amount.

“This would allow the violation to quickly move through the system,” Loperfito said. “My associate investigated communities, particularly in Eastern Pennsylvania, where it was found to be a faster way to do code violations.”

Now, a violator is taken to a magistrate, where a hearing is scheduled and the municipality is responsible for court fees.

When it does reach the district court level after a second citation, borough Engineer Lucien Bove said judges reportedly are issuing huge fines.

“I’ve seen it work in other communities,” said Bove.
