Volunteers needed at Leechburg recycling center

Leechburg needs help at its recycling center.

The center on Logan Avenue Extension separates plastic, glass, cardboard, and paper and sends it to compactors, said Mayor Wayne Dobos.

“We hope to pick up some volunteers. We have four regulars. Some of the volunteers were older and had to stop,” he said.

“Anyone who can lift about 25 pounds can help,” he said.

The center operates from 8 a.m. to 11 .m. Monday through Friday. At one time, hours were offered on afternoons of the third Sundays of the month, but that has been eliminated, Dobos said.

In the past, some scouts were involved. They could also help again, if supervised by adults, Dobos said.

Councilwoman Nancy Bono said she has volunteered at the center for at least 15 years.

“It keeps stuff from the landfill,” she said.

Leechburg sells the recycled and compacted items and puts the revenue into the borough’s general fund, she said.
