This is the scene of a fatal shooting on the 300 block of Main Street in downtown Latrobe on Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017.
A 15-year-old Latrobe boy was shot to death Tuesday night in a fourth-floor apartment in downtown Latrobe, and a juvenile was detained by police as a suspect, police said.

The victim, Devin Capasso, was fatally shot once in the upper torso about 6:30 p.m. in Apartment 43 at 333 Main St., Latrobe police Chief James Bumar said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:25 p.m. by Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Jonathon Jenkins.

The juvenile suspect, whom Bumar declined to identify, was being questioned late Tuesday. No charges had yet been filed, the chief said.

Police will confer with Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck in deciding whether to charge the teenager as an adult or juvenile, Bumar said.

The victim was in the apartment with an adult who resided there and some fellow juveniles when the gunshot was fired, Burmar said. The suspect and witnesses were found in the apartment and near the scene of the shooting. The chief said he was not certain where the juvenile suspect was found and detained.

The investigation is continuing to determine whether the shooting was accidental, Bumar said. The chief said that no drugs or alcohol were a factor in the shooting.

Two stolen 9 mm pistols — a Glock and Smith & Wesson — were found by police at Alexandria Alley, near Chestnut Street, a few blocks from the apartment building, Bumar said. Police are tracing the ownership of the guns and who possessed them at the time of the shooting, Bumar said. The chief did not say who removed the guns from the apartment and dropped them in the alley.

The apartment building where the shooting occurred was cordoned off Tuesday night, and Westmoreland County detectives were assisting Latrobe police in the investigation. Authorities were waiting to obtain a search warrant late Tuesday before entering the apartment to continue the probe.

The victim was described by his cousin, Christopher Grycuk of Latrobe, as “a great kid” who loved to play football and basektball. He was a student at Greater Latrobe Area High School, which started classes Monday.

To Andrea Pedder, a fifth-floor resident living in the apartment above the shooting, the gunshot she heard “sounded like a big bang.”

Pedder said she looked out her apartment door and saw someone walking up the stairs, carrying two guns.

Joe Hays, who was visiting Pedder on Tuesday evening, said he realized that a gunshot had been fired when he heard the loud bang. He said he ran down to the apartment and saw at least two girls inside.

“Everybody was freaking out, and no one was helping the kid,” Hays said. He said he applied pressure to the wound on the left side of the victim's chest and a girl was holding up his head, but they could not save him.

“He was turning blue,” Hays said.

Stephanie Massello of Latrobe said her teenage son had been in the apartment visiting friends at the time of the shooting and was being questioned by police. Massello said she was walking on Main Street toward the nearby Dollar General store when she spoke with her son from a window of the apartment, shortly before the shooting.
