1800s family cemetery on Flight 93 property restored, open for tour

A small family cemetery in Somerset County has been cleaned up and restored by maintenance workers at the Flight 93 National Memorial, according to the National Park Service.

The cemetery is located within the boundaries of the Stonycreek Township memorial and includes graves dating between 1856 to 1892 that belong to the Sorber family. A tour of the cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday will be guided by Stephen M. Clark, superintendent of the Western Parks of Pennsylvania.

Maintenance workers have cleaned and landscaped the cemetery area, straightened headstones and installed a fence around the gravestones, according to the advisory.

The graves are not associated with the Sept. 11, 2001, crash of United Flight 93 in a nearby field. Forty passengers and crew members died there after wresting control of the plane from hijackers and thwarting an attack on the U.S. Capitol.
