Jennifer Miele, former WTAE television personality and Excela Health vice president of consumerism and innovation, has joined the Diocese of Greensburg as chief communications officer.

This is a new position at the diocese.

“It is vital that we continue to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ and tell the story of our faith,” Bishop Edward C. Malesic said in a statement. “We believe Jennifer's experience with information sharing, particularly in our region, gives us a unique advantage in spreading the Gospel message.”

Miele will leave Excela to join the diocese this summer.

She said her first priority will be creating a “strategic communications plan,” crunching data to figure out how to reach out to current, lapsed and potential Catholics.

“Simply put, the Diocese of Greensburg seeks to be more accessible and connected for all generations of Catholics, and the whole community,” she said.

Diocese spokesman Jerry Zufelt described her position as a new approach to the church's longstanding mission of spreading its message.

“She'll be helping with the diocese outreach to people of all ages, but especially ... next-generation Catholics,” he said. “The church's role has been to reach out to people throughout the years. People of all ages, in all stages in life.”

Miele started at WTAE in 2002, covering news in Westmoreland, Indiana, Fayette and Armstrong counties — the same communities she'll be serving with the diocese. After almost eight years, she went from WTAE to Excela Health.

Joining the diocese was a natural next step for her career, she said. At WTAE, she created a network of contacts throughout the area that was made stronger at Excela. She said her new job will allow her to continue to use her skills to help people.

She's a longtime parishioner of Immaculate Conception Parish in Irwin, and she said conversations with diocesan leaders eventually led to her new position.

“If you like it so much, why don't you stay?” she recalls them asking.

Miele is an adjunct professor of advertising at Saint Vincent College and board member for the Economic Growth Connection.
