Greensburg won't govern size of U.S. flags

There are no limits on one show of American patriotism in the city of Greensburg.

Council Monday adopted a new banner ordinance that exempts American flags from size regulations. The move came after someone pointed out the large American flag flying at the new Gander Outdoors store off Mt. Pleasant Road, city administrator Kelyse Milliron said.

While the ordinance requires that banners be no more than 50 square feet in size, Mayor Robert Bell said the ordinance does not pertain to the American flag.

Gander Outdoors flies a 40-foot-by-80-foot American flag in front of the store. The large flag is a feature of the stores operated by Camping World Holdings of Lincolnshire, Ill., a store spokesman said. Camp World acquired the Gander Mountain outdoors retail chain in a bankruptcy court auction approved in May 2017.

In other matters, council unanimously approved the termination of the parking facilities manager Robert Charley, who had been removed from his job on Aug. 20.

Bell said it was a personnel move and declined to comment on a reason for the termination. Charley, who could not be reached for comment, had been the parking facilities manager since 2004.

The mayor said Charley was not terminated for budgetary purposes, although the move will save the city money. Charley’s annual salary was $47,093.

The job will be filled by a combination of employees from the police and fiscal department, Bell said.

Council also awarded a $19,990 contract to Donald M. Miller Inc. of Uniontown to build new roof at the bathhouse at Veterans Memorial Pool at Lynch Field.

Council also approved the $28,689 purchase of a 2018 Ford Explorer from C. Harper Ford of Rostraver Township.

The new Explorer will replace one that was demolished in a crash in July, Bell said.
