Daniel E. Carr, 33, of Hempfield will be ordained a Catholic priest on Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg.

Hempfield native Daniel E. Carr will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday by Greensburg Bishop Edward C. Malesic, fulfilling an ambition that began in the fifth grade.

Carr, 33, who was ordained a deacon in July, will be ordained to the diocesan presbyterate at a 10 a.m. Mass at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg, his home parish.

His is the only priestly ordination scheduled in the Diocese of Greensburg this year.

Carr grew up attending Holy Cross parish, Youngwood, where he was baptized, received first Holy Communion and attended the former parish elementary school.

An estimated 150 family members and friends are expected to attend on Saturday.

Carr graduated from Hempfield Area High School in 2002 and earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Saint Vincent College in 2006.

He worked for Ethix Systems after graduation but began to consider the priesthood after the business closed.

“I took my time and really thought about it,” Carr told the Catholic Accent. “I spent a lot of time with the people I loved. In a few months, priesthood was the only thing left on the list (of future careers).”

Carr approached the diocesan vocations office in 2011 and was given books to read and questions to consider.

After a review process, he enrolled at St. Mark Seminary and Gannon University, Erie. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sacred theology at the Pontifical North American College and Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

After ordination, Carr will celebrate his first Mass at 3 p.m. Sunday at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. He will have a parish appointment for the summer but will return to Rome in late September to finish studies at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family.
