Hempfield woman duped out of $3,900 in 'Sweepstakes' scam
State police in Greensburg are warning residents of a new contest scam after an elderly Hempfield Township woman reported that she was recently duped out of $3,900 in a fake Reader's Digest Sweepstakes contest.
The 87-year-old victim told Trooper Kimberly Zubovic that an unknown telephone caller informed her last month that she had won a sweepstakes prize of $300,000, plus a new Nissan car.
The female victim told Zubovic that paid $3,900 in fees in order to collect the prizes which never arrived.
Anyone with information on the scam is asked to contact state police at (724) 832-3288.
