Stewart is a member of the Pennsylvania State Police mounted unit. The horse was named after Trooper Michael P. Stewart III, 26, of Unity, who was killed in a vehicle crash in the line of duty.

The Pennsylvania State Police is looking for some horses to join the ranks.

The agency is seeking equine donations to join the mounted patrol unit which is deployed statewide for various operations, including searches, crowd control and security, according to a news release. Members of the 26-horse unit also participate in parades and other community events.

The animals are based at a stable in Hershey.

Six troopers work with the unit full-time and others work part-time in addition to their regular duties.

Agency officials are looking for geldings with quiet dispositions between ages 5 and 15. Drafts and draft-crosses are preferred and the animal must stand between 16 and 18 hands tall.

Donated animals will be examined by a veterinarian and accepted on a 120-day trial basis, officials said in the release.

For more information or to arrange a donation, contact Cpl. Carrie Neidigh at 717-533-3463 or cneidigh@pa.gov.
