Knife-wielding man attacks 2 in Sheetz lot in Greensburg
A trip to a convenience store for gas and food Monday night turned violent for two men who were attacked by an intoxicated, knife-wielding man, according to Greensburg police.
Donald Eugene Kunkle, 33, was carrying a knife with a 7-inch blade and threatened to hurt the victims and police officers who responded to the Sheetz at Route 119 and Harvey Avenue, according to court documents.
Kunkle was arraigned on aggravated assault and related charges Tuesday afternoon. His last known address is in Donegal.
The victims told police they were sitting in a parked 1972 Pontiac LeMans coupe at 10 p.m. Monday eating food they had purchased inside when they saw a man later identified as Kunkle trip over a curb nearby, according to documents.
Kunkle threatened the two men, police said. He leaned in the open passenger side window and punched the passenger in the head, police said. The driver reached over and was slashed on his right hand, police said.
The men rolled up their windows, but Kunkle continued to punch the driver's side window and spit on the car, officers said.
The victims told police that they “could see him with the knife in his hand,” Patrolman Jason Gain wrote in a criminal complaint against Kunkle.
“(Kunkle) also punched, kicked and gouged the vehicle with the knife,” Gain said.
The men drove to another parking spot and called 911.
When police arrived, Kunkle threatened police officers, attempted to kick out windows of a patrol car and urinated on the floor of a holding cell at the police station, according to documents.
The male driver suffered a cut on his hand.
Kunkle is charged with three counts each of terroristic threats, aggravated assault and criminal mischief, two counts each of reckless endangerment and resisting arrest, four counts of simple assault, and single counts of harassment, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
He's being held in the Westmoreland County Prison on $50,000 bail.
An Oct. 9 preliminary hearing is set before District Judge James Albert.
