Mt. Pleasant residents, business owners concerned over permit parking
Several Washington Street residents approached Mt. Pleasant Borough Council members Monday night to ask if something can be done to alleviate parking issues there.
Charlie and Cheryl Kantorik, who operate an accounting business at 522 Washington St., first began looking into the issue after their clients had nowhere to park during tax season last year.
They originally wanted to have council do away with the ordinance that allows for permit parking on the street, but after they talked to residents along the street, they weren’t sure if that was the answer.
“We had people who wanted the permit parking and others who didn’t, and they both had valid points,” Cheryl Kantorik said.
She said many who didn’t want permit parking lived on the lower end of the street after Brooks Funeral Home where there’s really no issue with parking; residents who lived closer to the intersection of Diamond and Washington streets seemed more in favor of the permit parking because of the many patrons to businesses in that area.
Cheryl Kantorik added the reason some residents did not want permit parking was because any time they had a birthday party or some other get-together, their friends and relatives were getting tickets for parking along the street.
Those residents who did want permit parking, wanted it to ensure a spot would be available for them along the street. However, people were still parking in front of their homes.
Washington Street resident Pat Lopes said she was in favor of permit parking if it would be strictly enforced.
Council President Joe Bauer said they just received actual permit stickers that can be placed in a vehicle window so that police can better enforce permit parking.
As for the Kantoriks, Charles Kantorik said he can’t purchase a permit because he doesn’t live on the street, even though his business is there.
They asked council to consider putting some kind of business parking signs in a spot or two along the street.
Bauer said they should be able to have an answer for the Kantoriks by the Jan. 20 meeting, but probably wouldn’t have any more information about permit parking until the February meeting.
Borough Manager Jeff Landy said they met with the architect drawing up plans for a bathroom facility in Willows Park.
“I think they will be great bathrooms — we have a good plan,” he said. “We hope to have the plans drawn up and ready for bid within the next month.”
Landy also gave an update on the Penn Park project.
“This project should be ready for bid by the end of February, beginning of March, and the project should be completed by June 30,” he said. “It’s not just going to be parking with green space. There’s so much detail in this project. When it’s all said and done, it’s going to be one of the best in the county.”
In other business, council:
• Passed a motion to hire Anthony Vittone Jr. of Greensburg as a part-time police officer pending a background check.
• Approved resolutions to waive the required member contributions to the Police Pension Plan for 2015 and to increase the quarterly pension contribution to $3.20 per hour worked for non-uniformed employees for 2015.
