Excela Health's demolition of the former Jeannette Memorial Hospital is nearly complete on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014.

Demolition work at the former Jeannette District Memorial Hospital is wrapping up.

“We are about at the end of what we are able to do,” said Robin Jennings, spokeswoman for Excela Health, which owns the property. “We're nearing the end of the demolition aspect of it.”

The bulk of the structure has been torn down and hauled away, she said. Other work preparing the site for redevelopment is under way, but seeding the land will have to wait until spring, she said.

Demolition, estimated to cost $3 million, began in the early fall at the Jefferson Avenue property in the city.

The project is on schedule, Jennings said.

Excela bought Jeannette Memorial District Hospital in 2007 for $14 million from Pittsburgh Mercy Health System. Hospital officials tried to market the site for several years but found no buyers.

The hospital was opened in 1959 by the Sisters of Charity. It closed in 2011.

Work will be limited during the holidays, Jennings said.

Construction crews are permitted to work Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Excela has released no information about its plans for the property.
