Demolition is complete and renovations are under way in First Commonwealth Bank's $2.5 million project encompassing two Greensburg buildings.
The work started in late November and is expected to wrap up on schedule this spring, said Jesse Brocious, vice president and corporate facilities manager for First Commonwealth.
In the interim, the bank has been operating out of a temporary structure in the parking lot of its downtown Greensburg branch.
“I think we're pretty close. Obviously with old buildings you run into some snags along the way,” he said.
Making sure the buildings are up to code has required a few small changes to the plans, but nothing significant enough to derail the project, according to Brocious.
The bank is renovating the first floor and mezzanine of its downtown Greensburg branch at 111 S. Main Street and turning the long-vacant second floor of the Bair Building at 143 S. Main Street into office space for its employees.
The bank donated the seven-story 111 S. Main building to Seton Hill University last year, but will lease the lower floors for at least 15 years. Employees who work on the upper floors will be moved to the Bair Building once work is completed.
Interior demolition and framing work are done. Now workers are installing electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems before preparing to add final touches.
Large bay windows will be installed in the Bair Building, replacing tiny ones that don't let in much light.
Overall, Brocious said the work has been slightly easier than anticipated.
Brocious said he isn't sure when work will be completed. The bank has ordered items like glass walls for the interior of both buildings, and the completion time depends on when they arrive.
“They're a tremendous finish. They look great,” Brocious said.
The temporary full-service banking location remains open at the parking lot at East Pittsburgh Street and South Maple Avenue.
The building at 111 S. Main St. was constructed in 1924 and occupied by the First National Bank of Greensburg. It always has been used as a bank, becoming First Commonwealth in 2001.
