South Huntingdon motorists and residents on Wednesday were dealing with a landslide and a washed-out bridge in the wake of heavy rain and flooding that hammered the area on Monday.
Two residents became isolated in their home along Huntingdon Road Monday when the storm washed out a private bridge over Lick Run that provided access to their dwelling, according to Larry Nemec, township emergency management coordinator and chief of the Turkeytown Volunteer Fire Department.
A contractor is expected to arrive Thursday to repair the bridge, he said. Nemec has been in touch with the residents and instructed them to call 911 if they need to leave for an emergency.
“If they need to get out in an emergency, I would use an aerial truck to get them,” he said.
The landslide, which closed a section of Reduction Road, was reported late Tuesday and will be addressed by township crews, Nemec said. Residents on Reduction can use either Glacier Drive or Fitz Henry Road to detour around the slide, he said.
In a notice on its website, Westmoreland County Community College advised those attending classes at its Public Safety Training Center to reach the facility via Glacier Drive.
Other damage from the storm included some flooded basements and benches that washed away at the Yukon ball field, Nemec said. Several local roads were temporarily closed by high water.
