Chabad Jewish Center of Monroeville to host ‘Light the Night’ event Dec. 3

The Chabad Jewish Center of Monroeville will sponsor a second annual Light the Night event in December.

The free event, which will feature a public lighting of a Jewish menorah, will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3, at the Monroeville Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Panera Bread’s parking lot.

Rabbi Mendy Schapiro said the event is always special, but this year especially.

“Following the recent horrific events at Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill, we are doubling our efforts to bring the message and light of (Hanukkah) to the world,” he said in a news release.

“It is important that we join together to encourage one another and share in the joyous event while proudly declaring that darkness will never prevail, we need to increase the light to dispel the darkness,” Schapiro said.

The menorah that will be lighted at the shopping center is one of 10 large menorah displays in the Eastern Suburbs sponsored by Chabad Jewish Center of Monroeville. Others will appear around the world during the eight-day Jewish holiday.

Aside from the menorah lighting, there will be a chocolate coin drop from a Monroeville fire truck and a musical performance from Gateway School District fourth-grade choir students. There will also be music, food, warm drinks and prizes for those in attendance.
